Building Schools for the Future
The Building Schools for the Future programme (BSF) is a £45bn government programme. The idea, launched in 2004, was to upgrade or replace all of England’s 3,500 secondary schools. Less than 40 schools have opened. But now the BSF programme is planning to replace 230 schools a year, if the government is to reach its target by 2020.
The Building magazine for 12 September 2008, examines the BSF programme. It interviews a headteacher on his own experience of the programme and Chris Woodhead, the former chief inspector for schools. Also spotlighted are six of the best new schools built under BSF.
Finally there are facts and figures on cost-analysis for sustainable schools, as part of the government's target of reaching zero-carbon schools by 2016.
