Academic Route To RICS Membership

RICS has developed a bespoke route to membership for academics, recognising the importance of their role within the profession and the need to provide an opportunity for competence to be demonstrated in a different way to those who practice. Academics are required to provide evidence of competency relating to teaching, research and external engagement.

As an academic route applicant you will have undertaken teaching and research activities that are relevant to the profession over a minimum three year period. The three years can be a total, not necessarily continuous ie in 'one block'.

The requirements are:

Academic / Professional Qualifications

Relevant Prior Experience

RICS accredited degree At application, a holder of an RICS accredited degree must have undertaken academic activities relevant to the profession over a three year period. (The three years can be a total, not necessarily continuous, ie in 'one block')
A surveying related higher degree An applicant who does not have an RICS accredited degree but has a surveying related higher degree, must have undertaken academic activities over a three year period on a course that is now accredited. (The three years can be a total, not necessarily continuous, ie in 'one block')

To decide whether you qualify, the first step is for you to send your CV to RICS using the resume template which can be found in the downloads section on the right of this page. (This resume needs to be sent to contactrics@rics.org) Along with the resume you will also need to send a 3000 word statement that documents how your final assessment portfolio is relevant to the profession and how this has been applied to your chosen pathway. One of our professional advisers will make an initial assessment.

If you meet the requirements for the route, the next step is for your CV to be reviewed by a vetting panel of RICS members who will decide whether can come forward for final assessment. If this panel agrees that you meet all the requirements and can come forward for assessment you will be asked to send in a number of written submissions. The final stage is a competency based interview, using these submissions, conducted by RICS assessors.

If the vetting panel does not put you forward for interview, RICS will advise you of your possible next steps and which of our other routes to membership might suit you better.
