The provision of robust technical practice standards is a major thrust of RICS activity.

Our Practice Standards inform the technical excellence of RICS members and set RICS surveyors apart from other professionals.
Through the Faculty structure, and the expertise of specially convened panels of member experts, RICS produces a broad programme of practice standards, guidance and information for members.
These come in several types, and carry varying degrees of weight and status.
Mandatory standards are obligatory for all RICS members to follow when providing a service covered by such a standard.
These are often referred to as Practice Statements, though there are some other instances of mandatory status standards that you will need to be aware of.
Advisory and best practice standards represent the majority of RICS standards' output.
These documents set out RICS recommended approaches to particular areas of practice and service lines.
These standards are largely covered by the titles of Guidance Notes and joint-industry Codes of Practice.
Information status publications are often designed to provide a quick alerter on a changing area of practice, as a precursor or support to the production of weightier practice standards.
Equally, many niche guides and much supporting technical advice produced by the faculties can be found under the broad information-status heading.
For full practice standard definitions, please see the separate document.
Please note that the RICS Valuation Standards (the RICS ‘Red Book’) contains information at both mandatory and advisory levels. View the full text of the latest edition (available in many languages) and associated Valuation Information Papers.
