Inadequate or poor quality standards relative to products/services can result in rework, non-conformances, increased construction costs, client dissatisfaction, redirection of resources, and ultimately, negatively impacts on the other project parameters, inter alia, health and safety (H&S), environment, productivity, and time.

Two surveys were conducted among members of the South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA) and the East Cape Master Builders Association (ECMBA). Findings include the following.

The majority of GCs do not implement written documented QMSs; QMSs can contribute to the mitigation and elimination of rework/non-conformances; quality management interventions can enhance client satisfaction; the implementation of QMSs enhances performance, and provides the catalyst for the synergy relative to the project parameters such as client satisfaction, cost, environment, H&S, productivity, quality, and time.
