There is a wide range of Pathways available to qualify as an RICS member covering 19 different areas of practice, at APC (Chartered), and ATC (Technical) level.

For the Built Environment group the Pathways are

Building Control

Building control surveying gives its professionals the opportunity to work on a huge range of building types as part of a normal day.

Building control surveyors ensure that that building regulations and other legislation are followed in the design and construction stages of new and altered buildings.

Building Surveying

Building surveying is one of the widest areas of surveying practice. Chartered building surveyors are involved in all aspects of property and construction from supervising large mixed-use developments to planning domestic extensions.

This varied workload can include everything from the conservation and restoration of historic buildings to contemporary new developments.

Project Management

Project Managers occupy a central role in the development process, driving successful completion of projects.

Project management is a thriving professional discipline much in demand around the globe.

Project Managers will be appointed at the beginning of a project and will assist the client in developing the project brief and then selecting, appointing and coordinating the Project Team.

Quantity surveying and Construction

Quantity surveyors are the cost managers of construction. They are initially involved with the capital expenditure phase of a building or facility, which is the feasibility, design and construction phases.

But quantity surveyors can also be involved with the extension, refurbishment, maintenance and demolition of a facility. Quantity surveyors work in all sectors of the construction industry worldwide.

Taxation Allowances

Taxation allowances surveyors combine the skills of a Quantity Surveyor with their knowledge of construction and experience of legislation, accounting and investment.

They advise clients on the tax allowances available and the requirements of asset segregation to comply with their client’s and the taxing authorities' requirements.
