Assessment of Technical Competence (ATC)

From 1st January 2009 the technical grade of RICS membership is being replaced with the new Associate grade (AssocRICS).

A new Associate Assessment process is rolling out from 2009 for candidates looking to achieve the Associate grade of membership.

If you are currently a technical trainee or the new Associate Assessment is not available now for your chosen pathway, you may work towards the ATC but will qualify as an Associate member (AssocRICS), upon successful completion of your final assessment.

RICS has introduced a simpler, more market-relevant process for its technical qualification in the UK. Access to the qualification has been broadened but the quality of the RICS mark remains.

A layered approach to final assessment enables different types of skills displayed by technical staff to be captured. The assessment is in two parts:

  1. Completion of an online exercise proves awareness of RICS' ethical requirements
  2. Demonstration of sector-specific competencies is achieved through a number of written submissions

Overall, the two outcomes of an RICS final assessment are a pass or referral. In the minority of cases, where submissions provide insufficient evidence of a candidate's ability, an interview may be necessary.
