Event Overview
RICS Lincolnshire are giving you a rare opportunity to take a tour of York Handmade Brick's factory in Alne.
York Handmade Brick are manufacturers of genuine handmade bricks, pavers, specials and terracotta floor tiles, utilizing the locally quarried Lacustrine Triassic Mudstone clay.
Its factory at Alne, north of York, combines traditional hand thrown brick making with state of the art kiln firing technology, to produce approximately 4.5 million bricks per year, all with a distinct character typical of clamp fired bricks of a bygone age.
The tour encompasses all aspects of the production process, from winning the clay, clay preparation, forming, drying and firing through to dispatch. If tour numbers allow, there may also be an opportunity for some visitors to actually hand throw a brick themselves.
Visitors will be able to assess the company's sustainability credentials – it recently attained ISO14001 Environmental Management Scheme accreditation, as a result of its efforts to minimise the impact of its manufacturing techniques on the environment.
York Handmade Brick is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, although there has been brick, tile, drainage pipe manufacturing on the site for about 200 years.
The company's ability to manufacture bespoke clayware has led to it being involved in some very prestigious developments over the years. These include restoration of Whitby Abbey Visitors Centre, the restoration of Scampston Walled Gardens and the renovation of Murrays Mill, Ancoats.
