Serious Soccer

In September 2007, invites went out to teams to compete for the Davis Langdon cup, in the 2nd Annual RICS Matrics Indoor Soccer Tournament. The event sold out within 48 hours. Many teams held private training sessions, some held friendlies, and some picked up the ball and wondered what they were supposed to do with it. Words were had between companies, gauntlets and challenges thrown down, and the tournament was all set for a classic.

The night arrived, and it was immediately obvious that the standard of football was going to be higher than the previous year. Many companies brought along support bringing attendance to 140.

Immediately it became aware that certain teams, namely Abi Group, Walton Construction, Hay’s Construction and Property, Davis Langdon, Melbourne University, Teabaggers , Woolworths Construction and Rider Levett Bucknall, were the teams to beat. However the buzz going around the pit lanes was how watching the Melbourne University team was like watching Brazil in action. They immediately became the hot favourites.

After each team had played 2 games apiece, Hays Property and Construction, kindly gave out water bottles and drinks to all participants, and the knock out rounds concluded. Alas, it was at this point that many teams were lost, as only 8 of the starting 16 teams proceeded to the next round. It was evident that several teams were relieved to be going home early, others not so pleased, but everyone had enjoyed themselves.

It was at this point that bodies started falling as teams were stretched with exhaustion yet tasked to raise their game one more time. In this first round Rider Levett Bucknall had a fantastic game but an eventual loss against Melbourne University, with a star player from Rider Levett Bucknall being forced to retire to hospital for stitches halfway through the first half of the game. While in another court, Multiplex and Davis Langdon held a hot tempered game, resulting in 1 non playing player being sent off, but the ultimate winner, 4-3 for Davis Langdon.

Onto the semi finals. Melbourne University vs Davis Langdon and Hays Property and Construction vs TeaBaggers. The scene was set for a potential rematch from last years final (Teabagger vs Davis Langdon), but this was not to be.

Teabaggers, a team of individual skill, could not break down a unified team - Hays Property and Construction, and yet Davis Langdon, last years winners, struggled, they fought for every ball, some sweat, blood and tears, and somehow edged out the indomitable and hotly tipped Melbourne University. Davis Langdon vs Hays Property and Construction.

With both teams looking far from refreshed battle commenced.

Hays Property and Construction scored first, Davis Langdon second and tempers started to flare. It became obvious that Davis Langdon were playing with their heart on their sleeves, but Hays Property and Construction were in control, the final result, 3-1 to Hays Property and Constuction.

The teams retired to the Gunn Island Hotel for refreshments and presentation of the winners and runners up medals, and of course the Davis Langdon Cup.

RICS Victoria and Tasmania would like to thank all teams for entering, apologise to all teams whose entries were late, (we shall be holding another one in early new year). Thanks in particular to Chris Chapman and James Harrison for managing the event on the night, Stewart Cavin and Neil Richardson for organising, and most importantly to thank Davis Langdon for sponsoring this years event, and Hays Construction and Property for providing the refreshments.
