Renewable Energy Applications in Buildings – New Practice in Hong Kong

11 October 2006

The application of building-integrated photovoltaic technology has developed rapidly in Hong Kong in recent years. The first large-scale experimental system was built at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1999.  Since then a total of about 1MWp of PV modules have been integrated into buildings in this small territory.

During the past seven years the most significant change has been that many property investors and architects have now started considering how to use solar energy at the beginning of their new developments. This paper presents the experience and findings from our research and consultancy projects completed in recent years. The past, current and future application of this technology is summarised.

In addition, this paper presents other renewable energy applications in the territory, especially wind power generation. The details of our recent efforts to develop a renewable energy park in Hong Kong are also reported, in which a number of solar and wind energy technologies are included for research and demonstration purposes.  Wind energy application has shown good potential for future renewable energy power generation in this region.
