RICS matrics Liverpool and IoM Spring 2007 Update

Inter - Professional / Brand Promotion

Five a - side Football

As part of RICS matrics’ responsibility to continually promote the brand of RICS amongst other professions, we recently held our inter-professional five a side competition at the Power League in Everton.

The event was extremely successful with 38 teams taking part. The format was that of group stages with the two most successful teams in each progressing to the knockout stages. A complementary buffet was served in the lounge afterwards, where current Chairman Andrew Quilliam presented the winners and the runners up with their medals.

As far as the Merseyside and I.O.M. matrics team was concerned, we managed to give a good account of ourselves and only narrowly missed out on qualification due to a goal in the last minute of the last match by the opposition.

Nautical Night on the Mersey

We have also recently co-hosted, along with Merseyside Trainee Solicitor Group our ‘Nautical Night on the Mersey’.

Making the most of Liverpool’s World Heritage Site Waterfront, a 150 professionals from the city cruised up and down the River Mersey on board one of the famous Ferry Boat’s. The theme of the night was networking, which was encouraged by free drinks, a buffet and a DJ.

A champagne raffle was also drawn with all proceeds going to Lionheart.

Careers Conventions

The committee also continues to visit local schools and sixth form colleges to provide valuable advice for students considering surveying as a career and also to students who just want to know a little more about the profession Most recently members of the committee have attended King George V College and also, pictured below, Calday Grange Grammar School on the Wirral.

National Golf and Five a Side Football Competition

On 14 July 2007 the RICS matrics will be hosting a national five a side football competition in Manchester. Further details will be finalised nearer the date itself. The format for the tournament is that each regional committee will host the local heats with the best placed teams going on to play in the national finals.

In addition to the football event, the RICS matrics will also be hosting a national golf competition. It is planned that the event will take place on 21st - 23rd September 2007, venue to be arranged nearer the date itself. As with the football, the best placed participants from the regional heats, will go on to take part in the national tournament.

Please contact Frederick Slater (RICS matrics UK Sports & Social Secretary) on 0151 236 6864 or fredslater@toddandledson.co.uk if you are interested in taking part. Alternatively, you can speak to your regional chairmen about participating.

Professional Development

As well as focusing on events aimed at APC candidates such as the ‘Final Assessment and Critical Analysis Preparation’, the committee aims to provide a wider range of topics over the next year focusing more on surveyors daily tasks and responsibilities.

At our most recent CPD event approximately 50 guests turned out to attend our tour of Cains Brewery in Liverpool. The event qualified as CPD, but perhaps more interestingly, provided a unique insight into the beer production process.

After the tour there was the chance to network and meet with various surveyors whilst enjoying the free buffet and complementary drinks which were provided. Pippa Page of Irving Rice, and committee treasurer, commented “I think the fact that the event qualified as CPD, as well as providing a social theme made the event a real success.

Next on the CPD agenda is our tour of Williamson Tunnels which is to be held on 18th April 2007. If you would like further information on this event then please contact Nicola Woolford on the details below.

For further information on CPD events, or for suggestions for future events, please contact Nicola Woolford of Powell Williams Partnership and committee Secretary, on nicolawoolford@pwp.cc or 01244 319 046.

Networking

Breakfast / Lunch Meetings

Over the coming months, the committee we will be arranging a series networking breakfasts/lunches. The exact venues and dates are still to be decided, however should anybody feel that they would be interested in attending then please contact Frederick Slater on 0151 236 6864 or fredslater@toddandledson.co.uk

Raising the Ratio

The Merseyside and I.O.M. matrics is currently supporting a scheme to raise the ratio of women in surveying. As a result we recently held a ‘Raising the Ratio’ event at Anderson’s bar in Liverpool. The theme of the night was wine tasting, which was put on by a professional Vintner. The event was the first of a kind and although attendance was less than at our usual events, we still managed to attract 25 female surveyors from around the city, which is a lot more than the number that usually attend. In the not to distant future therefore, we are hoping to host another ‘Raising the Ratio’ event to try and build up the success of this event.
