BSc Surveying students available for placement

19 June 2008

Offering an opportunity to a third year surveying student could be a mutually beneficial experience.

The School of the Built Environment at UUJ is strongly committed to providing industry focused education to meet the future staffing needs of Northern Ireland’s economy.

This is particularly true of the School’s surveying provision which via an RICS partnership agreement provides full and part time courses in:

  • Quantity Surveying
  • Building Surveying
  • Property Investment & Development
  • Urban Planning and Property Development.

Each of these full time courses contain one year of industrial placement, ordinarily in a firm of chartered surveyors or other employer of chartered surveyors in both the public or private sectors and contracting organisations.

The students gain invaluable experience during this year, gaining insight into the workings of the profession and practical experience to contextualise the theoretical elements of the course.

This is particularly useful in equipping the student for the challenging final, degree bearing year.

The placement year also represents a time of personal development – it is often apparent that the students leave as students and return as surveyors!

The benefits of the placement experience do not only accrue to the student, however.

Benefits for the employer include:

  • Highly motivated and skilled undergraduates who are willing and eager to learn and are expected to make a worthwhile contribution to the employing organisation
  • High calibre personnel with necessary skills and knowledge for an increasingly competitive marketplace
  • The opportunity to influence and participate in the educational process
  • Gain new perspectives and approaches to problems
  • Develop partnerships with institutions of Higher Education
  • Raise the profile of the organisation within the local community
  • Provide staff development opportunities for employees involved in training, mentoring and supervising students
  • Raise the standards of job applications for permanent posts by providing more practical skills to potential future candidates
  • Meeting flexible recruitment requirements

Many organisations have already enjoyed the benefits of participation in the placement element of UUJ's surveying courses. If you would like to reap the benefits for your organisation there has never been a better time.

If you would like to find out more, look at Ulster University's website or contact the relevant Placement Co-ordinator at the School of the Built Environment.
