According to Defra, the construction industry uses about 420 million tonnes of materials each year, of which approximately 109 million tonnes result in waste.
Over 30% of the most serious fly-tips dealt with by the Environment Agency involve construction related waste.
To help tackle the issue of construction waste, in 2004 the DTI (now BERR) introduced a Voluntary Code of Practice for Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) to provide a structure for systematic waste management at all stages of a construction project's delivery.
