The integration of modern building engineering services into historic buildings presents consultants and contractors with considerable difficulty. Conservation policy generally dictates that standard approaches to the design and installation of mechanical and electrical work (acceptable in general refurbishment or new build) are inappropriate.
This paper reports the findings of a study which sought to identify the nature and frequency of the refurbishment characteristics surrounding such work. It concludes by highlighting factors, identified as crucial to success, when seeking to realise the client's strategic requirements in building conservation projects.
