The ICE Design & Practice Guide Contaminated Land - investigation, assessment and remediation.
Nick Langdon (Director), Jo Strange (Regional Director) Card Geotechnics Limited
The first edition of this guide was one of the most popular publications of the Institution of Civil Engineers when it first came out in 1994.
The authors, Nick and Jo were faced with a task to maintain the main principles and important aspects of the particular subject, and to offer guidance to the non specialist as to appropriate sources for more detailed information.
The 2nd Edition, published in November 2007 recognises the whole area of contaminated land investigation and remediation has undergone very significant changes since 1994 and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
The lecture will be in two sections;
- an explanation of the main changes for those practicing with surveying organisations and the framework within which a specialist within the field of contaminated land investigation and remediation can be expected to work
- an overview of remediation methodologies available and how they are impacted by recent legislation on waste minimisation and disposal.
The last decade has seen both the regulation framework and the implementation of planning conditions on sites change beyond recognition.
It leaves many bewildered and rightly asking questions of those they have employed to assist them.
- Just what constitutes a desk study capable of satisfying regulators?
- A conceptual site model what is it?
- Why do the Environment Agency and the Local Authority take different standpoints and is the EHO talking to the planning department?
- I have commissioned a site investigation but is six samples enough and……….. soil gas it’s a problem for the neighbouring landfill operator isn’t it?
These questions and more will be discussed and explained in the session
The speakers will be happy to take questions on specific areas of interest at the end of the presentation.
Jo Strange and Nick Langdon are chartered engineers and environmentalists regularly advising commercial major housing developers, contractors and fellow engineering professionals on all aspects of contaminated land.
