Professional Ethics and Core Values

Members are expected to follow a high standard of behaviour, both professionally and personally.

To assist members RICS has prepared a set of standards in a helpsheet entitled Maintaining Professional and Ethical Standards that they can apply in their every day lives.

These standards replace the nine core values that members will be familiar with, and supersede the two guidance notes below regarding professional ethics.

RICS has written two guidance notes regarding professional ethics:

  1. Guidance Note on Professional Ethics prepared by a working party of RICS members
This guidance note provides advice to RICS members on aspects of their practice. Where procedures are recommended for specific professional tasks, these represent 'best practice', i.e. procedures, which in the opinion of RICS, meet a high standard of professional competence.
  2. Guidance Note on Professional Ethics Part  2: case studies
This document includes suggested responses to ethical issues and dilemma outlined in part 10 of the Guidance Note on Professional Ethics.
