Integrating Facilities Management Experience Into Student Learning Through Practical Projects at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore

Facilities Management (FM) can be considered as the integration of processes that an organization uses to maintain and develop the overall services that support and improve the effectiveness of its mission and goals.

Facilities Management is a sector that is rapidly expanding both technically and professionally to enhance the redevelopment and growth within an organization. Facilities Management supports enterprises and other organizations to enable sustainability and competitiveness. It is a multi-disciplinary activity within an organization that impacts organizational functions, resources and the work environment as the organization carries out its objectives, goals and strategic mission.

This paper examines how Construction Management Technology students’ at the University of Maryland of Eastern Shore have been integrated into some of the projects executed within the University to provide hands-on and meaningful experiences in their educational endeavors. In particular, the students were made to look at areas of FM like facilities’ renewal, space utilization, budget planning, maintenance and evaluation and upgrades of facilities.
