Shaping the Future of our Profession

Director of Operations, Europe | Regional Manager, DACH (RICS)

Happy to share some of my impressions from Munich: Expo Real is the place to be in October if you’re part of the international real estate network. It is one of the most dynamic and business focussed fairs in Europe.

Agility Panel Expo CareerDay 2017

This year it surpassed previous records in its 20 year history with 2,000 companies, cities and regions exhibiting (+13% vs. 2016) and 41,500 visitors attending (+6% vs. 2016). Germany was obviously at the top of the list, followed by UK and Netherlands, with representation from many other European countries, Russia and the USA.

Our previous stand was already bursting at the seams last year and therefore we extended our existing cooperation with PropertyEU and became a stand partner at their 144m² International Investors Lounge in Hall A2.232. As in previous years, our RICS qualified professionals took 2 hour shifts to share their expertise with stand visitors and prospects.

Staying ahead of the game

"RICS Futures: Our changing world” was an omnipresent theme. This year, we delivered four RICS expert panels. The success of these was having put our finger on the pulse of very topical subjects and identifying authoritative speakers from our Europe markets:

  • The Future of Facility Management – what will it look like?
  • RICS Futures Forum: The Changing role of the valuer
  • How agility will help you stay ahead of the game
  • International Real Estate Challenge (IREC), a student careers project

Diversity is key to success

A very special higlight for me and my co-authors RICS President Amanda Clack FRICS and European Director Maarten Vermeulen FRICS was the launch of our first RICS D&I Book “Diversity & Inclusion Management in the real estate sector: A practical guide” published by Springer, an internationally renowned German publishing house. Many people came up to us at the end and thanked us, some very emotionally, for having as an organisation, been courageous enough to talk about some of the sensitivities of D&I.

Connecting people

We also held our signature event, the popular RICS Whisky Tasting & Get-Together which has turned into a must-do, now attracting 250 guests enjoying more than 600 glasses of Scottish Single Malt while having  lively conversations.

Another highlight is our Expo Real Welcome Dinner on the evening of Day 1 at a typical Bavarian restaurant. This is a way of saying thank you to key professionals who support RICS in various functions. Around 25 people from around Europe and even the USA accepted our invitation and we were also honoured with RICS President Amanda Clack FRICS. All in all a very down to earth way of regenerating our batteries.

There are many people who make Expo Real a huge success through their commitment and passion for RICS but also for “doing a very good job”. While international standards, professionalism and stakeholder engagement are very high on our Expo Real agenda, at the end of the day it’s the teamwork which matters most.
