RICS Deutschland – with over 1,200 qualified members and more than 1,800 trainees and students - has long established itself as the largest of all national groups in Continental Europe. Embedded in the new global structure, benefitting from a strong economy and based on a remarkably committed membership RICS Deutschland is a dynamic player within the RICS in Europe family.
RICS takes its vision of gaining market recognition of RICS standards in the key economic and political centres of the world very seriously. The main drivers for this focus reflect the public interest mission of RICS, the needs of the industry, the economic climate and the opportunity to connect our industry to other international standards.
Perhaps the most widely known international standards in the sector are those produced by the International Valuation Standards Council. These are incorporated in RICS’ own Red Book, now in its eight edition, available in twelve languages and widely recognised as the leading reference for practitioners. In Germany during the last 12 months we promoted the Red Book along with the Valuers Registration Scheme (VRS) and Firms Regulation by means of various successful events such as a European Valuation Conference, a Valuation seminar and a VRS Workshop.
Expo Real last year has seen the launch of the RICS `Real Estate Agency and Brokerage Standards` (REABS) which filled an important gap in this sector of the market. Available in seven languages incl. German and being widely adopted, the REABS will shortly be joined by the Real Estate Management Standards, aimed at both commercial and residential property management.
Sitting over the top of all these standards and acting as a linchpin, are the recently launched RICS Professional and Ethical Standards. Behaving ethically goes to the heart of what it means to be a professional and these standards give a clear set of professional and ethical standards to guide behaviour and ensure that those we deal with have confidence in the way we do things.
On a local level RICS Deutschland relies on a “Think Tank” of eight Professional Groups which meet the challenge of developing own products and services that meet increasing market needs. Highlights of their output in 2012 include the well-received `List of Services Asset Management in Germany`. It contains all management services that, according to the German Professional Group Asset Management, companies offering real estate asset management services on the German real estate market should offer and provide, in a qualified manner, to third parties. The 32-pages-publication is bi-lingual in German and English.
The Professional Group Sustainability has published the second issue of `Going for Green` a Sustainable Building Certification Statistics for Europe.
Networking at its best
Our members continue to highly appreciate and to make use of the international and regional professional network RICS offers to them. RICS-Focus, the annual flagship conference of RICS Deutschland, which took place in its eighth year in Berlin, was fully booked weeks in advance as was the networking event on the eve. See Lian Ong FRICS, the first non-British RICS World President (in office 2011-12) attended both events while beyond completing a top-level programme incl. various stakeholder meetings and media activities.
Young Professionals were attracted in particular by our 3rd German University Symposium for RICS students and trainees. It provides an excellent platform to learn about career paths and job opportunities in the property sector and to network with their peers.
Unbelievable but true: Our nine regional groups - all led by dedicated voluntary members - organized more than 50 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and social events during our business year 2011-12 which linked more than 2.500 participants.
Ambassadors for real estate
In 2012 the German board has launched an `Eminent programme` which will be rolled-out further in 2013. RICS Deutschland invited a select group of highly renowned personalities in real estate into RICS Fellowship. This is seen as an ideal opportunity to reward and recognise their great career achievements. In return we would like to see them act as ambassadors of the profession and the RICS qualification in their respective companies and networks.
