The second edition of the European Retail Conference took place in Milan on 6 February.

A successful Pan European conference dedicated to the Future of Retail in Europe, brought together last week 170 professionals from the property sector and 60 actors from the investment and retail sector, including  Aedes Siiq Group, Brandpots, CACI, Carrefour Property, CBRE, Cocuzza & Associati, Cushman&Wakefield, DLA Piper, Duff&Phelps, ECE, Eurocommercial Properties, Finiper, Grandi Stazioni Retail, Infuse, ING Real Estate, Lombardini22, One-Works, ORION Capital Management, OVS Group, PwC, Savills IM, Sonae Sierra, Trade Lab, Unibail-Rodamco, Urb&Com-Politecnico di Mil.

Among the speakers, top international leaders from the industry including some of our most prominent RICS spokespeople in the region: Tina Paillet FRICS, Chair of RICS Board in Europe, Martin Eberhardt FRICS, Chair of RICS in Germany, Daniel Levi Formiggni FRICS, Chair of RICS in Italy, Javier Kindelan FRICS, Chair of valuation Professional Group in Spain, to name a few. Panellists at the RICS European Retail Conference 2018 in Milan provided an insight into the key industry developments and also promoted some of our international standard, such RICS Property measurement standards, Red Book as well as the importance of ICMS (International Property Measurement Standards).

The retail market is certainly among the sectors in which real estate is becoming more transformed and where the most significant growth margins are recorded. The RICS European Retail Conference is a moment of discussion on new market trends. We talked about investment opportunities but also about the evolution of the sector: from the introduction of new technologies to sustainability, from the new paradigms of the customer experience to the new commercial formats. Our country is proving ready to take up the challenge of innovation. Milan in recent years, has been confirmed as one of the most attractive places for international investments in the sector and, for this reason, it is the ideal venue to host the second European event of the European Retail Conference .

Staring with an international panel on Retail trends in European cities with market intelligence from RICS monitors and other leading indicators and followed with great insight and answer to some of the most important challenges faced to date by the retail industry in Europe, such as the digital transformation, Design & Sustainability, the legal and fiscal implications, commercial asset valuation.Indeed, the European retail market has changed drastically and market players looking to stay in the race need to invest in innovation. Although there is no definite recipe for success, the general consensus is that offline stores need to transform into places that provide an experience. The conference was followed by a guided tour to: Il Centro di Arese e a City Life Shopping District.
