Expert Witness Registration Scheme (UK)
RICS EWRS - UK is a voluntary scheme that sets the standards for chartered surveyors who act as expert witnesses in the UK.
The register lists individual RICS members with specialist knowledge and the practical experience to provide impartial, independent evidence for a wide range of specialist fields including:
- Agriculture and farm business
- Arts and antiques
- Boundaries and party walls
- Building surveying
- Commercial property (rent review, lease renewal etc)
- Construction disputes and claims
- Dilapidations and housing disrepair
- Environmental surveying
- Landlord and tenant
- Leasehold enfranchisement
- Planning and development
- Professional negligence Property management
- Rating Valuation
To apply to join the scheme you need to:

Meet all the assessment criteria

Complete the application form and submit with an application free of £100 +VAT (cheques made payable to RICS)

A copy of your professional CV detailing your expertise and experience in the industry along with a copy of three years worth of (CPD)

Provide details of two people who you would like to act as referees on your behalf. These should be people who you have provided expert evidence to in the last three years (one should be a barrister or solicitor); and

Submit two expert witness reports prepared in contemplation of judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings within the last five years. These reports should be separated by at least one year in timescale.
Note: RICS does not assess technical knowledge as part of the entry process. The competence of an expert witness is ultimately determined by the client and the relevant judicial body.
