RICS Northern Ireland Awards 2010 Project of the Year - St Malachys Church

St Malachy's in the Markets area of Belfast has won the highly prestigious RICS Northern Ireland Project of the Year Award ahead of numerous multi-million commercial and government schemes.

The prize was awarded at a ceremony in the Great Hall at Queen's University, Belfast on 17 May.  Pictured above after the ceremony with their winners plaques are QS Oliver Magill MRICS; John Savage and Bronagh Lynch of Consarc Conservation and Fr Martin Graham.

The overall winning project, which also won the Building Conservation category of the awards, involved the complete restoration of the early 19th century Catholic church.

Judges said that St Malachy's "stands out" with "minimal intervention and maximum sensitivity combined to produce a church worthy of the attention of serious lovers of architecture, secular or otherwise".

St Anne's Square, Belfast won the Regeneration category of the highly-respected awards; The New Library at Queen's University Belfast won the Sustainability category and The Ulster Museum claimed the Community Benefit section.

The four category winners were selected from 33 entries, and a full description of all the winners, highly commended and commended projects are to be found on flickr.

The winners, in addition to demonstrating excellence in their specific category, also illustrate how the skills of property and construction professionals can make a very highly positive contribution to local communities, the environment and the economy. There were a record number of entries to the awards this year and, overall, the quality of projects was extremely high. It is encouraging to see such a diverse range of buildings amongst the winners, as this illustrates that excellence in the built environment is widespread.

The local winners will go through to compete in the overall RICS Awards against projects from around the world, with the winners to be announced in London later this year.

Local projects have been very successful in the overall RICS Awards during recent years and we would be very hopeful with regard to this year's Northern Ireland winners, such is their high quality. We really did have an extremely tough job picking the winners this year.
