This paper explores an initial look into the impact that new US measurement and verification (M&V) requirements will have on the green building construction industry.

The research identifies the evolution of M&V requirements as it relates to the USGBC’s LEED Green Building Rating System, the revised prerequisites for evaluating building performance and the impact owners, designers, and contractors will face with new metering and reporting requirements. This research used qualitative research methods primary sourced from future construction code detailing, case studies, and documentation of user feedback pertaining to M&V systems.

More specifically, the research identifies:

  1. the requirements governing the installation of M&V systems
  2. what impact these systems have on the structure
  3. the impact on the building occupants.
