The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) announced on April 12 a landmark collaboration which promises to transform the US$1 trillion global facility management (FM) industry.
By joining strategic resources, they will create an unprecedented level of industry support to meet growing demands from the 25 million FM practitioners around the world, as well as launch a single and compelling career pathway into the FM profession.
What does this mean for the two organizations and its membership? The combination brings together deep expertise in facility management with an international delivery platform for qualifying professionals, providing training & education, holding world-class conferences & events, aligning research and thought-leading insights, as well as co-creation of new products including the benchmarking of facility management data.
For current IFMA members, it offers a professional pathway to MRICS and FRICS qualifications. For RICS members that have already qualified through the FM pathway, the collaboration provides them with the entire suite of member benefits afforded to IFMA members. Given the size of the market, no one organization has really driven a uniform career path from the time that someone enters the profession to a senior executive position. Firms that have global requirements to support end users and occupiers in multiple markets will be able to provide a consistent level of professionalism and technical expertise no matter where their property or portfolio.
More details of the relationship will be unveiled over the next several months leading to a full launch at World Workplace in San Diego this coming October. This flagship IFMA conference will cascade to multiple markets going forward with a view towards bringing together the FM profession across the globe. This relationship is more than a simple MOU, it is a transformative collaboration that will bring together the best of both organizations and allow us to grow the FM profession.
