As 2014 comes to a close I wanted to send holiday greetings on behalf of the US Country Board to all our members and friends across the country.

Over the past year, we have had several well-received events, including the roll-out of the RICS Development Series in Chicago and Los Angeles. The Development Series features a well-known building, whether completed or under construction, with a speaker panel that includes a cross-section of professionals involved in the project. The Wilshire Grand project in LA being built by Korean Airlines was the topic at the most recent gathering of more than 70 members and colleagues. It was held at EY’s offices, opposite the building site last month and you can learn more about that event, and others here.

One of our most significant achievements for RICS over the past year has been Fannie Mae’s formal recognition of the RICS designation for professionals undertaking multifamily property condition assessments. The recognition is related to Fannie Mae’s Property Condition Assessment Instructions for Lenders as part of its Delegated Underwriting and Servicing (DUS) Platform, which is a $30bn+ real estate financing program with the largest commercial lenders in the United States. Following extensive engagement, we have secured the recognition of a federal government body in the U.S., a first in official government recognitions. It is well worth noting that this significant step forward along the path to gaining U.S. recognition for the designation started from a single enquiry for help to me from a member of the SoCal Chapter, which led to setting the RICS management team into high gear. My sincere thanks to the team for their excellent efforts.

A friendly reminder that the deadline for CPD reporting is quickly approaching. Please visit your record at rics.org/cpdrecord to ensure that your CPD is up to date. There are several ways to finish completing CPD – read this article on the 8 ways you may have completed CPD already, and also John Hughes’ recent reminder with additional ideas.

I look forward to being able to report that the United States was one of the highest ranked countries in compliance globally! In that regard, I will be holding a webinar on Continuing Professional Development on December 19th at 9:30 pacific; 12:30 eastern. To register, please click HERE.

The US Country Board is looking ahead to 2015 with the main priorities being increased member engagement and activity across the country. We look forward to continued communication with you in the coming months where I will be reporting on upcoming events and opportunities for you to network with colleagues.

In this sense, I cannot miss an opportunity to plug the upcoming LA2015 Summit of the Americas held from April 22-24, where there will be ample opportunities to network with professionals from around the region, and attend a variety of leading-edge conference and workshop sessions. We have recently released our conference agenda which I encourage you take a look at and look forward to meeting everyone at the Summit.

Internationally, RICS continues to lead the way in establishing global standards. Our support and active participation in the International Property Measurement Standards Coalition has helped this important initiative grow into one that has brought together over 50 organizations for a common purpose. Stay tuned for more information on IPMS and other standards-based initiatives led by RICS.

I wish you and yours a blessed holiday season, and all the best for a prosperous 2015.

Peter Smith FRICS

U.S. Country Chair
