16 May 2017
Once a year the global facility management (FM) industry unites to recognise the important role of professionals in the sector. As part of World FM Day (17 May), this week we celebrate the contributions FM makes as a profession that lies at the very heart of any organisation's corporate real estate strategy.
World FM Day is instigated by Global FM to recognise the vital work that facility management professionals and the facility management industry contributes to business worldwide. It aims to raise the profile of the FM profession and the role facility managers play in underpinning the health, safety, productivity and well-being of people who utilise the built environment.
World FM day sets a context for knowledge sharing and thought leadership across the global FM industry. This year, RICS in Americas Managing Director Neil Shah will lead a virtual session on 16 May looking at the future of the profession, discussing major trends including mass urbanisation, the rise of the worldwide middle class and big data. RICS FM collaboration partner, the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) will host a three-day Virtual Conference Webinar Event, featuring over 30 sessions hosted by industry professionals from around the world. Sessions will span a range of topics from sustainability and smart cities to the new digital workplace.
Discover how FM is transforming our world and shaping the future:
In April IFMA and RICS celebrated one year since launching a global collaboration, representing a significant evolution in the FM sector. The collaboration aims to provide an unprecedented level of industry support to meet the growing demands of the 25 million FM practitioners around the world.
It’s been nearly a year since we got together and talked about many of the things that are happening in the FM world and how we might collaborate to really help advance the industry, improve the profession, raise its profile and heighten standards.
Key IFMA-RICS collaboration initiatives from the past year include:
What this collaboration has done is change the conversation that we’re hearing in the FM industry; that is a real important aspect of raising the bar — it’s exciting times for the sector.
Both leaders note the role the collaboration has had to help break down siloes between FM and the broader built environment industry. These efforts serve to raise the profile of FM, giving greater voice and increased status to the profession, ultimately driving all around better industry solutions and enabling business success.
A message for World FM Day
President and CEO of IFMA Tony Keane and RICS Chief Executive Sean Tompkins share a video message highlighting the significant strides the collaboration has made over the past year to support the global FM community and define the future of the profession.
