Did you know that RICS has been holding new members receptions for 60 years?
The first reception took place at RICS HQ at Parliament Square on 31 January 1955. Three Fellows and approximately 90 Professional Associates and one Associate signed the register watched by family and friends after being presented with their diplomas by RICS President CP Bowyer TD. One female surveyor, Miss Constance Mary Elliott, was among the 90 male surveyors at the presentation.
Junior Organisation (JO) Chairman A T Brett Jones spoke about the history and functions of the JO and RICS Secretary Brigadier A H Killick outlined the services available to members.
The attendees could bring up two guests. The proceedings concluded with afternoon tea.
Two further receptions took place on 3 and 4 February of the same year.
The personal signing of the Register ceased in the mid-1990s but the format of the receptions continues in very much the same manner today.
