My Way: Emilia Teo

For some, the aspiration to work in real estate isn't just a professional passion, it's a family matter. This is truly the case for Emilia Teo, who knew from an early age that she would trailblaze a career in the industry, in fact, she's a third-generation family member of Tong Eng Group.

The beginning

I am a third-generation family member of Tong Eng Group, which established its roots in Singapore real estate development and investment 70 years ago. I've had exposure to, and an interest in, real estate since an early age. I was always attracted to the dynamic nature of the industry and I knew at some point in my life that I would join the family business.

After graduating from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Science, I began my career in finance with global banks: Citigroup and ABN Amro in the wealth management arena between 2007 and 2009. I then embarked on a Master of Business Administration with the University of New South Wales, Sydney, between 2010 and 2011 before joining the Tong Eng Group.

The breakthrough

In 2014, I spearheaded Tong Eng Group's expansion and maiden overseas market foray into Australia. During this time, I held the lead role in developing an Australian office portfolio and led multiple transactions amounting to A$600 million.

The present

I am currently a director for Tong Eng Group, where I'm responsible for driving business development for the group while overseeing operational efficiency in current portfolios. I am constantly looking for new acquisition or growth opportunities in different real estate asset classes or geographies.

I feel extremely honoured and grateful to be shortlisted for the Property, Infrastructure and Construction category at the Women of the Future Awards Southeast Asia. Regardless of whether I win, I hope to inspire and support more Asian women in the workplace.

The real estate industry is primarily male dominated; many leaders and management executives are men. I am fortunate to have been provided with leadership opportunities and autonomy in my role and aspire to provide similar support to other women to help them grow and succeed in their careers.

The future

I plan to expand Tong Eng Group's real estate business model by building an asset management platform to add to our existing development and investment arms. Additionally, I aim to drive more impact investing and corporate social responsibility initiatives for the Group.

Having been born with a hearing impairment, I am grateful for the opportunities I've had and would like to do my part to build a more inclusive world for the next generation. I am passionate about fostering positive relationships with the society in which Tong Eng Group and I operate in and making a positive impact on the community.
