With an eye on the role of technology in the sector, building information modelling (BIM) features prominently in this issue.

Peter Caplehorn argues that BIM can revolutionise building control – but only if it is adopted comprehensively by the construction industry – while Emma Vigus and Philip Tansley look at how cyber liability insurance and risk management apply to the technology.

Fire and water are both on our agenda as well.Nick Hunt maintains that safety inspectors play as much of a role in preventing conflagration as firefighters do in combating blazes, and Mark Anderson looks at how to resolve safety issues relating to fire doors. Meanwhile, Peter Wilder contrasts the UK’s conservatism in flood management with the more innovative approach taken in China, and Paul Cribbens explains why the National House Building Council is targeting the performance of basement waterproofing.

Finally, many thanks to those who responded to our recent journals survey – your feedback is invaluable when trying to balance the range of subjects that we cover. I always welcome your thoughts and ideas about both the sector and the journal, so do please do get in touch at any time.
