Louise Brooke-Smith: RICS' first female President

Louise Brooke-Smith is one of RICS’ leading female surveyors and in 2014 was elected as its first female President.

In addition to being a Planning and Development Surveyor, Louise is a qualified urban land economist and chartered town planner. In 1994, after working in the public and private sectors across the UK and internationally, she established Brooke Smith Planning Consultants. In 2017, the company was acquired by Arcadis, the global multi-disciplinary consultancy, where Louise is now an Equity Partner heading the Town Planning and Social Value propositions.

Throughout her career Louise has been heavily involved with RICS; she was Chair of the RICS West Midlands regional board in 2000; she was vice-chair of the National Planning Forum in 2002 and for some years was an RICS Commissioner for Disaster Management.

In addition to leading the RICS Sub-Saharan Strategy and supporting the establishment of three RICS Centres across the continent, Louise’s major contribution to the profession has been her work in diversifying the property industry. Louise has spoken frequently about the need for the property industry to be more inclusive not only to women, but also to LGBT and BAME professionals.

RICS' Inclusive Employer Quality Mark

Reflecting this, Louise launched the RICS Inclusive Employer Quality Mark, a voluntary and self-assessed benchmark, the first for the property sector, designed to help the industry develop a diverse workforce. IEQM asks employers to pledge commitment to adopting and continually improving six globally-applicable principles, such as ‘flexible working arrangements’ that provide opportunities for everyone to perform at their highest levels.

Whilst honoured to be RICS’ first female President, Louise is proud that her work in diversity, together with that of others, has helped change the property industry for the better, both in the UK and internationally.

Pride in the Profession

2018 marks the 150th anniversary of RICS. To celebrate this milestone, we've launched our Pride in the Profession initiative to showcase the significant and positive impact surveyors have made to society.

The initiative is a great chance for all of us to promote our profession by demonstrating how varied and rewarding a surveying career can be.

We've already received a great many nominations of exceptional surveyors from RICS members around the world that you can read about below, but we need more.

Tell us about the people and projects you admire most.
