Course overview

Despite the wider industry wanting to use BIM, not all members of the ‘project-delivery’ network are embracing it and one of the key reasons is a shortage of specialist BIM professionals.

The Certificate in Building Information Modelling Project Management will cover the entire BIM project lifecycle and provide you with detailed knowledge and the skills required in order to manage each step of the project.

A project manager has a critical role when advising clients, internal and external stakeholders about the benefits of BIM – how, when and where BIM can contribute to the project outcomes and then have the skills and knowledge to manage the project. The BIM manager is required to understand the BIM process, create the project environment in which BIM can work effectively.

This course will give you the skills and knowledge to effectively manage a BIM project at each stage. The feature of this course is a simulated BIM project which will run throughout the course to embed practical knowledge at each stage of the BIM project process.

Professionals with at least 5 years of experience in managing projects within the built environment including: Quantity Surveyors, Project Managers, Building Surveyors, Asset Managers, Facilities Manager, Architects and Engineers, Cost Engineers, BIM Manager, BIM Coordinator and Construction Project Managers

This course is made of up of 7 modules delivered across a 6-month period. The technical units covered within this course are listed below:

  • Module 1: Introduction to BIM & the business case of BIM
  • Module 2: Strategic definition phase
  • Module 3: Preparation and brief phase
  • Module 4: Concept design/ Developed design/ Technical design/ Construction
  • Module 5: Handover and close out
  • Module 6: Operations and end of use
  • Module 7: Course Summary and Exam

Learning outcomes

By the end of the web class, you will be able to:

  • Identify the business case for BIM in any project, taking into account benefits, examining the drivers, functionality and characteristics of a good BIM model
  • How to create an EIR and BIM execution plan including the process, content, production and evaluation
  • Apply the processes and standards applicable to the management of information about an asset throughout its lifespan
  • Identify who and how to engage with the right stakeholders at each stage of the project lifecycle
  • What is the interaction of process, technology and people in a BIM environment
  • Apply the tools and techniques that support enhanced collaboration among the project stakeholders
  • Understand the technology and the common data environment that supports BIM
  • The application of technology in one or more of the following: geo-spatial, design, cost, time and facilities management environments
  • Recognize the level of detail that BIM models can contain and how this relates to the stages of design, construction and maintenance
  • Know how BIM requirements can be implemented within the project legal, procurement and tendering framework and to review global examples of this in practice
  • Recognize the legal implications of BIM in terms of intellectual property, insurances and potential liabilities
  • Evaluate contract requirements and commercial data of BIM models, and the inputs and outputs to be expected at each stage of the project lifecycle

Learning resources format

E-learning

Within each module will be dedicated e-learning sessions. Within these courses delegates will gain an understanding around the practical techniques and international standards required within the construction and quantity surveying pathway.

Reading material

Learners will further study and understanding of the methodologies with the directed reading material. Sourced from textbooks and articles, these readings support development throughout the course program.

Case study

Technical case studies provide examples of practice, within these case studies participants will practice the theory taught within the module. Responses will be shared within the online forums.

Discussion forum

Questions, comments, case studies will be posted to the forum (one module) with the objective of allowing the participants to reflect on the e-learning and also to discuss their own experiences under each module heading around QS practice.

End of module quiz

At the end of each module is a short quiz, to check understanding of the content and to help track progress.

Live web classes

On completion of all the technical modules, participants will be required to attend one 1.5 hour live online web class. The structure of this session is to provide a detail overview of the practices and principles of QS. Provide participants with an open live forum to discuss their own interpretations and understanding of the learning outcomes of the course.
