My RICS: Kieran Chauhan, quantity surveyor

Kieran Chauhan FRICS explains how RICS membership has opened up career opportunities and enabled him to take his skills to Dubai.

Why did you decide to become a Chartered Member with RICS?

RICS is one of a few professional organisations that continuously promotes and enforces the highest standards within the construction and surveying industry. As a young professional entering into the industry, I decided to become chartered with RICS as it provides market confidence to clients and peers alike and demonstrates an individual possesses the knowledge, ability, competence, professionalism and ethical values to a set standard no matter what region you’re in.

What value has being chartered added to your career?

It has allowed me to easily transfer regions (UK to the Middle East) as construction professionals across the globe are aware of the qualities of a chartered member and the rigorous assessment criteria set by the RICS. Being an RICS Fellow has also provided additional credibility to instill confidence in third parties when advising on construction/surveying topics.

After I passed my Assessment of Professional Competence in 2014, I remember receiving numerous phone calls and emails from recruitment consultants.

Suddenly, in the eyes of organisations I had gone from being a quantity surveyor to a chartered quantity surveyor and I was more sought after.

How has becoming chartered helped increase your job opportunities?

After I passed my Assessment of Professional Competence in 2014, I remember receiving numerous phone calls and emails from recruitment consultants. Suddenly, in the eyes of organisations I had gone from being a quantity surveyor to a chartered quantity surveyor and I was more sought after. It was the accreditation with RICS that was the only variable, so from personal experience becoming chartered helps increase job opportunities.

Can you give an example of an instance when your RICS credentials have assisted you in your career?

They opened up opportunities to work internationally as I transferred from the UK to the Middle East. They have also allowed me to become deeply involved with RICS, such as being a board member of two RICS groups namely the UAE National Board and the Middle East and North Africa QS and Construction Professional Group. These groups allow me to have a first-hand input in supporting the RICS ethos and objectives and network, and to discuss ‘hot topics’ with like-minded senior members of the construction profession. In these positions I feel I can make a real difference to how the profession moves forward.
