Buildings consume over one third of energy worldwide, with this figure increasing in developed markets. At the same time, about one third of global carbon emissions can be traced back to buildings.

It could be argued therefore that professionals, organisations and professional bodies involved in the built environment have a responsibility, an ethical and moral obligation and a vested interest to understand what they can do to help reduce carbon emissions and mitigate the acceleration of climate change.

Is the ethical imperative of professionals, and organisations which employ them, to reduce carbon emissions in conflict with business/financial targets/objectives?  If so how do we adapt processes, ways of thinking to ensure combatting climate change is prioritised.

Alastair Mant, UK Green Building Council will give a talk exploring the outlook and the potential opportunities to manage and meet the challenges of climate change.  There will then be a panel discussion, chaired by Lord Bichard KCB, and an opportunity for you to participate online, questioning panellists and speaker and contributing to the debate on:
  • Outlook and predictions of climate change
  • Professional and ethical obligations
  • Operational and embodied carbon emissions – whole life assessment
  • Impact of legislative and financial business cycles
