BCIS is forecasting that oil prices in construction will rise by 2% in the year to Q4 2018, then by 3% per annum over the remainder of the forecast period. Oil prices are sensitive to political issues, particularly in the Middle East, which could put sudden upward pressure on prices. Consequently, oil prices are one of the biggest risks to the forecast.

Commercial construction output for 2017 as a whole shows quite strong growth of 5%. However, in the second half of 2017, output fell by 5% compared with the first half.
The construction industry generates a wealth of valuable cost data on projects, but most of it is not systematically captured for re-use on future projects.
Resource cost increases for painters and decorators have pushed up rates for this work between 1% and 2% in the past year, while costs for contractors working on domestic extensions and the like have seen rates generally rise by between 2% and 5%.

The BCIS All-in Tender Price Index (TPI) for 3rd quarter 2017 has been revised downwards to 313 based on an improved sample. The figure for the 4th quarter is 322. The annual change for 2017 (4Q16–4Q17) now stands at 13.4%.
