As we head into the new year, Building Surveying Journal has an energetic theme.

The UK Green Building Council’s chief executive Julie Hirigoyen explains why the built environment must aim higher than emissions reduction targets, while Mat Lown likewise encourages landlords to think beyond properties’ theoretical energy performance in responding to the Energy Efficiency Regulations.

Jane Richardson-Hawkes explains why London is pushing ahead with carbon offsetting, and Liz Stewart contrasts the requirements of recent English and Scottish legislation on energy performance.

Meanwhile, following last winter’s floods in the north of England, Paul Cobbing asks whether the concerns of affected communities have been properly addressed, Jon Rowling reviews the changes in the recently published 7th edition of the RICS Dilapidations in England and Wales guidance note, and Paul Bussey explains the rationale for doing CDM differently.

As always, I welcome your thoughts and ideas for the journal, so please do get in touch.
