Entry and assessment standards and processes for all grades of RICS membership are critical to ensuring confidence in the profession. They provide the gateway to membership,  ensuring individuals have the right knowledge, skills, experience and behaviours at the point of entry.

The Standards and Regulation Board established the Entry and Assessment Review, led by the Entry and Assessment Steering Group (EASG). The Review is a programme of work to research, design, and implement any new assessment processes identified for the profession.

The project will review and, where appropriate and subject to consultation, make changes to the following areas:

  • Eligibility requirements, including the role of the accredited degree, experience requirements, direct entry routes and their impact on diversity
  • Grades and classes of membership (inc. student, AssocRICS, MRICS and FRICS), and Chartered designations
  • Pathways and competencies
  • Methods of assessment; including the role of computer-based assessments, and consideration of accessibility and EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion).
  • Quality assurance of assessments
  • Other RICS Schemes and certifications
  • Relationship to post-entry learning and Continued Professional Development (CPD).

Latest update - February 2024

Since the release of the Entry and Assessment Review Interim Report last year, RICS’ dedicated project team has continued to consult with internal and external stakeholders and work with both the Entry and Assessment Steering Group (EASG) and the Qualifications and Assessment Committee (QAC), to consider numerous changes to the existing model.

The team is now in the process of developing an updated report, summarising the work undertaken to date and making recommendations and proposals. The report is to be presented to the Standards and Regulation Board (SRB) during its March 2024 meeting. The report will be published in the coming weeks.

In the interim, we are still keen to hear from our members and stakeholders on how we can future proof RICS qualifications, attract the next generation of surveyors, and promote equity, diversity and inclusion. To contribute, please email the team at: Entryandassessreview@rics.org.

“Our responsibility to future surveyors, and the society that will benefit from their work, means that we must ensure the standard of entry to RICS membership assesses the right skills, knowledge and behaviours, in the right way. This interim report is an important step on that journey.”
