My RICS: Anastasia Al Khatib, new member

Anastasia Al Khatib, a Facillities Management Consultant working in Dubai, explains why she decided to become an RICS member and how ethics will be central to the profession’s future in the Middle East.

Why did you decide to become a chartered surveyor with RICS?

I’ve always strived to be a reference point in my field of work. Throughout my career journey, I’ve seen that RICS would be the accreditation that would help me achieve my goals both in terms of knowledge and raising the trust in myself as a professional.

What value has this added to your career?

The greater technical knowledge I’ve achieved through my journey to attain the membership, a greater understanding of the importance of ethics, and being regarded as an experienced FM professional.

Has becoming a chartered surveyor increased your job opportunities?

I’m a newly elected member, so haven’t experienced that yet. However, I’m sure RICS accreditation will enhance my job opportunities in the market because of the benefits it adds to me as a professional.

Being part of a global network and organisation, that is known not only locally but also globally, comforts me and allows me to become a global citizen.

Can you give an example of when your RICS credentials have assisted you in your career?

I worked on a project where RICS standards and guidelines were the only well-developed guidelines for the specific exercise. This helped me deliver an exceptional solution that was more client specific and focused, and a solution that was not familiar to our market before.

How do you see the role of a surveyor changing to meet future needs?

I believe now the challenge is on ethics, as the built environment is evolving and there could be ambiguous situations. We need to stay on top of our ethical standards to maintain and increase trust in our discipline.

How does RICS equip you to cope with the challenges of an evolving built environment?

RICS is always on top of market trends because of the continuous surveys and global collaborations with other expert organisations, such as IFMA, as well as the continuous professional development workshops.

What do you enjoy most about being a chartered surveyor in the Middle East?

Being part of a global network and organisation, that is known not only locally but also globally, comforts me and allows me to become a global citizen.
