The RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment standard provides the industry with tools to carry out carbon assessments in line with the requirements of the standard which is heavily complex and technical. The standard provides explanation through examples and case studies to enable RICS practitioners to apply the new standard in a practical and ‘in use’ situation.

This webclass acts as an introduction to inform practitioners in why they should implement the requirements of the new WLCA standard, and it is viewed through the lens of UK and infrastructure, retrofit/refurb and maintaining and International. The webclass will be delivered in three parts.

Each class covers the following topics, viewed through the lens of UK, Retro fit or International.

Background and pre-construction

  • Understanding RICS professional standards
  • Why does carbon matter
  • Legislation and futures changes
  • Infrastructure and pre-construction

A1 - A3: Product stage

  • What is embodied carbon
  • When to start a carbon assessment
  • Sources of carbon data in the early stage
  • Carbon data sources and considerations for the design stage
  • Testing the validity of a carbon assessment

A4 - A5: Construction stage

  • Understanding transport of materials and people, plant and equipment
  • Understanding environmental product declaration (EPD) - worked examples of materials
  • Infrastructure and how this may be different

Beyond the asset

  • Module D: establishing the boundaries
  • Calculating the benefit
  • Assessing infrastructure for beyond asset

Webclass 2 specifically covers:

A4 - A5: Construction stage

  • Understanding transport of materials and people, plant and equipment
  • Understanding environmental product declaration (EPD) - worked examples of materials
  • Implications of fit out
  • Implications of refurbishment
  • Implications of retrofit to buildings

Learning outcomes

Predict the impact of legislation across the UK and globally

Consider when to start a carbon assessment and the validity of a carbon assessment

Recognise how the construction stage impacts on carbon emission

Understand how to assess infrastructure end of life carbon impact

“The ICMS Coalition will support carbon measurement standards that are open, consistent, comprehensive, and align with and promote ICMS for life cycle costs and carbon emissions reporting. The first carbon measurement standard endorsed by the ICMS Coalition is the RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment, Professional Standard, 2nd edition, which is a global approach to the measurement of carbon in the built environment. The coalition welcomes the adoption and alignment of ICMS 3rd edition within the new RICS standard. The ICMS Coalition welcomes other carbon measurement standard setters to contact us and be accessed for endorsement.”

“CRREM initiative is supporting the RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment, Professional Standard, 2nd edition. In our latest publication on “Embodied carbon of retrofits,” we are already referring to it. Global alignment, clear definitions and standards are key to ensure sufficient speed to achieve net zero by 2050 and avoid any form of greenwashing.””
