What lies ahead? If we knew that, life would be so very simple. But in this final edition of 2018, we’re taking an opportunity to look at some of the big questions that face us as we head into 2019.

For example, how does surveying need to change for the future? Do we need a new way of thinking about technology, and how we can be both international and local in our outlook? How can apprentices fit into that picture, as part of the next generation of surveying talent?

Will the UK’s exit from the EU turn out to be smooth or chaotic? As we go to press the ground is shifting fast, but our panel of experts from across property, construction and agriculture are looking into the crystal ball to see how Brexit could affect industry.

Elsewhere we look at how declining cities like Detroit and Pittsburg can bounce back and change their fortunes, with forward planning and new approaches to old questions. And finally – yes, this really is looking ahead – can we really build on other planets? We take a look at some of the construction techniques that could help us establish colonies other worlds.
