Course overview

Video web classes

On completion of all the technical modules, participants will be required to review video recorded online web classes. The structure of this session is to provide a detail overview of the practices and principles of QS. This will provide a deeper understanding of the principles covered in each module and reaffirm the learning outcomes.A quantity surveyor is concerned with the costs and financial management of the building life-cycle. The occupations of quantity surveying and cost consulting continue to grow in popularity and importance across the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.  Professionals possessing these skill sets are uniquely prepared to contribute to the transformational construction projects that are shaping the urban environments that we live in.

In this course, we will cover both pre and post contract processes, the commercial management of construction and concepts on various procurement options, the production of tender documents, the contractor's tendering procedure and strategy and the detailed process undertaken by the contractor to price tender documents. Explore construction technology, contract procedures and construction economics, looking at commercial and domestic measurement, as well as project estimating and management to an advanced level.

The aim of the course is to provide technical training around the key principles of tendering, estimating and pricing and provide you with knowledge of construction contracts and their financial provisions.  This course is aligned with the competencies required for the QS pathway and includes courses to prepare you for your APC submission.

Within each module will be dedicated e-learning sessions. Within these courses delegates will gain an understanding around the practical techniques and international standards required within the construction and quantity surveying pathway.

Reading material

Learners will further study and understanding of the methodologies with the directed reading material. Sourced from textbooks and articles, these readings support development throughout the course program.

Case study

Technical case studies provide examples of practice, within these case studies participants will practice the theory taught within the module. Responses will be shared within the online forums.

Discussion forum

Questions, comments, case studies will be posted to the forum (one module) with the objective of allowing the participants to reflect on the e-learning and also to discuss their own experiences under each module heading around QS practice.

End of module quiz

At the end of each module is a short quiz, to check understanding of the content and to help track progress.

Live web classes

On completion of all the technical modules, participants will be required to attend one 1.5 hour live online web class. The structure of this session is to provide a detail overview of the practices and principles of QS. Provide participants with an open live forum to discuss their own interpretations and understanding of the learning outcomes of the course.

Angela Denice Lai, FRICS, PQS, LEED AP O+M

Angela has a Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying and a Master of Science degree in Building specializing in Property Development and Management. She is also a LEED qualified professional in the Operations and Maintenance specialty (LEED AP O+M).

Angela has over 16 years' experience in the construction and development industry spanning South Africa, the UK and Canada. She is a Fellow with the RICS and a professional member of the CIQS and sits on the BC Chapter Boards of both (current President of CIQS-BC). Angela's experience is diverse having worked as both as a cost manager, a management consultant and a loan monitor. In addition to working for a Global Cost Consultancy, Angela also teaches part-time at BCIT and for Passive House Canada. Angela is a qualified and active RICS Assessor, and acts as a supervisor/counsellor to RICS candidates.
