A talk followed by a question-and-answer session focussed on rights of way and other third-party rights over land. The aim of the session will be to give attendees a firm understanding of the fundamental legal principles involved in such rights and how RICS members can help lawyers navigate enquiries or disputes about them. The talk will last approximately 60 minutes with the remainder of the time for the Q&A.
Michael Ranson, Barrister, Falcon Chambers
Michael Ranson is a barrister at Falcon Chambers and a former partner at Macfarlanes LLP, with over 20 years’ experience in real estate law. He advises and represents clients across the full spectrum of property matters, including landlord and tenant (commercial and residential), easements, restrictive covenants, lease interpretation, service charges, and boundary disputes.
Michael regularly appears in the High Court, County Court, and specialist property tribunals. His recent cases include 1954 Act lease renewals, contested service charge claims, modification of restrictive covenants, and complex estoppel and unjust enrichment disputes. He acts for a wide range of clients including developers, institutional landlords, local authorities, and national chains. Michael also sits as an arbitrator and volunteers as a case reviewer for Advocate, the Bar's pro bono charity.
