The planning, design, delivery, operation, and management of the built and natural environments are increasingly shaped by digital technologies, data and analytics, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools. RICS is positioning itself at the forefront of this transformation by ensuring that our profession is well equipped to engage with these new assets and processes.

The Data, Analytics and Intelligence (MRICS) pathway provides a route to RICS membership for a new type of surveyor; those that have and are building a professional career working with data and technology within the built and natural environment.

The pathway places strong emphasis on professional ethics, governance, interoperability, and communication, ensuring that digital skills and the use and management of data delivers effective, transparent, robust, and practical outcomes that support public interest, market confidence, and professional standards across the built environment.

This pathway is designed for professionals working in data analysis, digital delivery, information management, or analytics roles where their work directly informs built-environment decisions. While there may be areas of overlap with existing pathways, this route is not intended to replace established RICS professional pathways. Instead, it is aimed at a distinct and emerging professional profile.

By creating a structured pathway for data and technology professionals to join RICS, we're ensuring the profession can meet growing demand for expertise in this area. This work sits alongside an extensive programme to upgrade digital competencies for existing RICS members, through our CPD provision, professional guidance and standards development.

Areas of technical competency we anticipate will be included within this pathway (subject to finalisation):

  • Data Management and Governance
  • Analytics and Analysis
  • Cyber Security and Digital Resilience
  • Digital Transformation Management
  • Digital Ethics and Professional Responsibility

These are in addition to achievement of the mandatory RICS competencies required for Chartered membership entry.
