For the first time in the Institution’s history, RICS has produced a ‘Women in surveying: insight report’ that looks at the makeup of membership from a binary gender perspective and analyses the results of the flagship 2022 survey of women in the profession.

Our aim is to share feedback and insight from women on what the barriers to progression and career longevity are so individuals, teams and organisations can reflect and further examine their own behaviours, policies and practices and, more importantly, begin their journey in taking positive action to deliver change with lasting impact.

From lack of recognition at work to limited opportunities for career progression, women experience and continue to face discrimination, bias (whether unconscious or intentional) and inequity in systemic practices.

It is the responsibility of the Built Environment sector as a whole to collectively tackle the issues presented and further examine their own so professionals, regardless of their gender identity, feel an authentic sense of belonging, are valued for their talent, input and professionalism, recognized and rewarded accordingly.

“This insight report is a first for RICS, and what we aim to make the first of many as we continue working to shape a more inclusive and equitable profession for all. The more we understand about the makeup of the surveying profession through member data and feedback, the more we can do in terms of identifying pain points and setting strategies to remove barriers and drive meaningful change.”

We ask women in the surveying profession, whether members of RICS or not, to please take part in this year’s Women in the Profession survey so we can more accurately address the issues affecting them both within the UK&I and abroad and more effectively track trends and changes over time.

Download the report and help identify, share and implement solutions to close the gender gap in surveying and the wider built and natural environment.
