The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Dispute Resolution Service (DRS) and the Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA) signed an agreement to enable much closer working, collaboration and cooperation.

This new level of collaboration, which combines the ICA’s strategy and prominence within India along with RICS’ global expertise, should improve the standards of arbitration and heighten the role of ADR in the sector - minimising delays, establishing greater access to ADR, reducing the need for litigation and enhancing project efficiency in India’s booming built environment and infrastructure sector.

The agreement will further develop the domestic and international reputations of RICS and the ICA, working together as leading providers of high-quality arbitration, mediation, expert witness and other ADR services for disputes arising in the built environment sector in India.

The agreement sets down key and tangible actions which will contribute to the transformation of built environment arbitration in India. The organisations agreed to create an arbitration panel offering bespoke and high-quality arbitration service for India’s built environment sector. They will also develop and deliver training for specialist arbitrators and create appropriate accreditation and facilities for arbitrations carried out the panel. The full list of agreed actions may be found in the at this link.

The agreement document was signed by Mr Arun Chawla, Director General on behalf of the ICA, and Dr John Fletcher, Executive Director of Dispute Resolution on behalf of RICS.
