AI is developing quickly. The following are examples of the types of uses to which AI is currently being put and the types of outputs typically being relied upon within surveying:

Data processing

Processing large and complex datasets quickly, often to:

  • Detect patterns
  • Detect changes over time
  • Identify potential risks
  • Predict issues
  • Plan timeframes

Complex calculations

Making complex calculations based on vast datasets e.g. cost calculations, or providing estimated values

Monitoring and data collection

Monitoring data and physical assets via sensors, software and other devices. Such monitoring allows for real-time data collection which can be put to a variety of uses e.g. defect identification, identifying changes in asset use

Report writing

AI can use data, information and templates/examples provided to write – in whole or in part – reports and other formal documentation

Customer service

AI can be used to reply to client emails and/or to deliver web-based or telephone assistance in the form of chatbots

Virtual assistants

Co-pilot style AI can be used as a virtual assistant for practice management, drafting presentations, diary management and writing meeting minutes
