The proposed RICS Code of measuring practice, 7th edition establishes a standardised framework for measuring and reporting property, setting out clear definitions, measurement practices and reporting conventions for RICS members, RICS regulated firms and end users of measurement advice.
Previous editions have been widely referenced by organisations in the private and public sectors, so this update will ensure the industry has the most up to date information.
An expert working group, featuring a broad cross-section of industry stakeholders from rural, commercial, residential, valuation, professional measurer and quantity surveying, have helped develop updates to the code of practice.
Consultation is now open on the draft 7th edition of the Code of measuring practice. While there will not be major changes in the latest edition, the updates are necessary to ensure the guidance remains relevant and fit for purpose.
Click here for more information and to download the draft and respond, either by answering the questionnaire and/or commenting on the draft.
The consultation closes on 13 October 2026.
Before the final version of the 7th edition is published, RICS members and RICS regulated firms should continue to use the 6th edition of the Code and/or IPMS: All Buildings, adopting the appropriate measurement basis so as to satisfy the requirements of the instruction. The basis of measurement used should be documented.
The 6th edition of the Code of measuring practice became globally effective in May 2015.
Please note, the RICS Property measurement standard 2nd edition has been archived and should only be used as a reference. It can be accessed on isurv here. Alternatively, RICS members may contact knowledge@rics.org for a free copy.
