Confidence in Valuation Starts with Assurance.

Valuations only have value when confidence in them is justified.

The Valuation Assurance Committee (VAC) of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors exists to help ensure that confidence is earned and maintained.

Valuations underpin lending decisions, investment activity, financial reporting and trust in markets around the world. The VAC provides the independent oversight and assurance that helps ensure the regulatory framework governing RICS Registered Valuers and RICS Regulated Firms undertaking valuation services remains credible, proportionate and trusted.

RICS is seeking an Independent Member who can bring the expertise, judgement and independent perspective needed to help maintain confidence in valuation services relied upon by investors, lenders, regulators, governments and the wider public.

Why this role matters

The VAC's remit is broad and influential. It oversees the registration of RICS Registered Valuers and RICS Regulated Firms undertaking valuation services, continuing professional development requirements, monitoring and audit activity and the assurance arrangements that underpin confidence in valuation practice.

It reviews the effectiveness of the regulatory framework, considers emerging risks and market developments, and provides oversight and challenge to ensure that assurance arrangements remain proportionate, credible and aligned with the public interest.

This breadth makes the role uniquely valuable. The Committee does not simply review reports or approve recommendations. It helps ensure that the framework supporting valuation assurance remains effective in a world where regulatory expectations, financial reporting requirements and market scrutiny continue to evolve.

As an Independent Member, you 'll bring external perspective, independent judgement and constructive challenge to discussions that influence how confidence in valuation services is maintained across global markets. This role will particularly appeal to individuals who have commissioned, relied upon, scrutinised or governed valuation activity within financial reporting, investment, lending, audit, insurance or regulatory environments, and who understand the importance of robust assurance arrangements in maintaining confidence and trust.

How your expertise will be utilised

Independent Members bring specialist expertise and independent judgement, helping to maintain confidence in the regulatory framework that underpins valuation services across global markets.

Your contribution will span oversight of registration arrangements for RICS Registered Valuers and RICS Regulated Firms, scrutiny of monitoring and audit activity, consideration of continuing professional development requirements and review of the assurance framework that supports confidence in valuation practice.

You’ll help assess emerging risks, challenge established assumptions, scrutinise evidence and contribute to decisions that must remain proportionate, defensible and aligned with the public interest.

You’ll also help ensure that RICS' valuation assurance arrangements remain credible, transparent and globally relevant as markets, regulation and stakeholder expectations continue to evolve.

Throughout, the expectation is that Independent Members provide genuine challenge, bringing external perspectives that strengthen decision-making and help the Committee maintain trust and confidence in valuation services worldwide.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking an individual with significant senior leadership and governance experience who can contribute independent judgement and oversight within a complex regulatory environment.

Successful candidates are likely to have built their careers within financial services, regulation, compliance, professional standards, assurance, governance, legal, insurance, investment or related sectors where public confidence and effective oversight are critical.

You will bring:

  • Experience providing independent challenge and assurance at board or committee level.
  • Senior leadership experience gained within a regulated, assurance, financial, legal, compliance, insurance, investment or professional standards environment.
  • An understanding of the role of valuations, how they are used and their significance in markets and the economy.
  • An appreciation of the role that professional standards, assurance and regulatory oversight play in maintaining public confidence.
  • The ability to analyse complex information, exercise sound judgement and contribute effectively to collective decision-making.
  • A commitment to acting in the public interest with integrity, independence and accountability.

Additional experience that would be particularly valuable includes:

  • Experience operating across multiple jurisdictions or within organisations with international reach.
  • Experience of working within complex governance structures where committees operate as part of a wider regulatory or organisational framework.

Independent Members are appointed from outside the RICS membership. Candidates must not be, and must never have been, members of RICS. Full eligibility criteria are set out in the Candidate Pack.
