Successful mediators combine technical knowledge with the ability to manage people, process, and outcomes under pressure. The Mediation Training Programme is designed to equip professionals with this balance of skills through immersive, practice-focused learning.

From day one, participants are introduced to the fundamentals of mediation and its place within the wider dispute resolution landscape. This includes understanding how mediation differs from litigation and arbitration, and how the mediator’s role is rooted in facilitating constructive dialogue.

A strong focus is placed on establishing and maintaining a productive environment for negotiation. Participants will learn how to set clear ground rules, manage expectations, and maintain momentum, even when discussions become challenging. Communication is central to this, with practical coaching on both verbal and non-verbal techniques to help mediators engage effectively, build trust, and understand the information needed to move parties towards agreement.

The course also builds skills in negotiation and reality testing – essential for helping parties evaluate their positions and make informed, pragmatic decisions. Participants explore how to apply evaluative mediation techniques without compromising impartiality, ensuring that both the process and outcomes remain credible and balanced.

In the later stages of the programme, the focus shifts to advanced mediation strategies. Through role-play and real-world case scenarios, participants learn to handle complex disputes, manage time-limited mediations, and adapt their approach to the needs of the parties and the commercial realities at play.

Underpinning the entire programme is the RICS ACRE™ model – a structured approach that integrates an analytical approach, commercial awareness, restorative relationship-building, and expert knowledge. By applying this model in practical exercises, participants develop the confidence to navigate disputes across land, property, construction, and infrastructure sectors.

As tutor and mediator Peter Vinden highlights, there are several qualities and skills which make strong mediators, including the ability to motivate others, empathy and determination.

Each skill is reinforced through live coaching, structured feedback, and a final practical assessment that mirrors a professional mediation. This ensures that participants leave the programme not only with an accredited qualification, but also with the tools and confidence to manage real-world disputes effectively.
