RICS offers a range of membership grades based on your experience and qualifications:

  • Student: For those studying a relevant subject.
  • Candidate: For those working towards qualification.
  • Associate (AssocRICS): An entry-level professional grade.
  • Chartered Member (MRICS): For professionals who meet chartered standards.
  • Fellow (FRICS): For Chartered members who have demonstrated  exceptional contributions to the profession.
  • Retired: For members no longer in active employment but wish to stay connected.

Student membership is free and open to anyone studying a relevant degree or qualification - your course doesn’t need to be RICS-accredited. It’s a great way to connect with the profession early and access learning resources, networking opportunities, and career support while you study.

Yes. A recognised apprenticeship is a great way to start your surveying career, combining paid work with structured training. Once completed, it can lead to RICS membership. Level 3 Technical Surveying and Level 6/7 Chartered Surveyor Apprenticeships are only available in England.

Associate membership (AssocRICS) is a recognised professional grade for those with relevant technical qualifications or experience.

Chartered Member (MRICS or FRICS) is a higher status that reflects globally recognised standards of expertise and gives you the right to call yourself a Chartered Surveyor.

Requirements depend on the membership grade you’re applying for. You’ll usually need a combination of academic or professional qualifications and relevant work experience.

See membership grade requirements.

You can apply online through the RICS website. Applications include submitting details of your qualifications, work experience, and passing an assessment.

Apply to join RICS.

Completing the online application usually takes 15 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how prepared you are.

After you submit your application and make payment (if required), you’ll usually be enrolled and receive a welcome email within 2 working days. If your application or route requires extra checks, we’ll contact you within 5 working days.

If you’re not eligible for your chosen route, we’ll recommend better-suited options.

If you’re enrolled onto an assessment route as a candidate, the time it takes to qualify depends on your level of experience, qualifications, and membership grade you’re working towards.

Most candidates qualify within 6 to 36 months.

As an RICS candidate, you’ll have access to a range of support, including guidance documents, webinars, and one-to-one support. If you're applying for AssocRICS or MRICS, you’ll need an RICS member to act as your Counsellor to guide you through your application and assessment process.

Visit Find a Counsellor, Candidate Support, or Candidate Assessment Information for more details.

You can return to RICS membership by applying for reinstatement. Check the steps and see if you’re eligible on the Readmission and Reinstatement page.

Resigning from your membership

RICS offers a retirement concession for fully retired members, allowing you to maintain your connection to the profession. Check if you're eligible on the Retirement page.

Before you resign, check if you qualify for a concession. RICS offers reduced fees and support for members facing financial difficulty, career changes, health issues, or retirement.

If you still wish to resign:

  1. Complete the RICS resignation request form.
  2. We’ll review your request and may contact you to discuss your options or offer support to help you retain your RICS status.
  3. If you can’t complete the form online, contact RICS another way.

There’s no formal notice period, but it usually takes 4-6 weeks to process your resignation. You must continue to meet your membership obligations until your resignation is confirmed.

Resignation applies to both qualified professionals and candidates. Once your resignation is processed:

  • You will lose access to member or candidate services, including the RICS Assessment Platform.
  • If your firm de-registers with RICS due to your resignation, you must inform clients and insurers and remove all RICS references from your firm’s communications and materials.

Note: Ongoing disciplinary investigations continue even after resignation. You may not be permitted to resign if there are open cases or outstanding issues. For more information, refer to the Disciplinary Process.
