Overview

This talk introduces the speaker’s recently completed Hong Kong Spatial History Platform and explores how the research team has used various tools including optical character recognition (OCR) and geographic information systems (GIS) to transform Hong Kong’s historical records, maps and aerial photographs into spatial data. By bringing textual and spatial sources together in an intuitive, visual formal, the new platform traces the evolution of Hong Kong’s urban landscape. The database not only offers a new model for the digital preservation of historical documents, but also provides an important analytical foundation and empirical support for historical research with a spatial dimension. The talk will provide a detailed introduction to the platform’s features and operation.
