Championing RICS in Scotland: Scottish members on film

Ten Scottish surveyors came together in Glasgow this month to champion the work of RICS in Scotland.

RICS is working with members to produce a video that showcases the expertise and impact of surveying on Scotland, while discussing key themes for those working in the profession or considering a career in surveying.

A team of predominantly early careers professionals generously gave up their time to support the project, taking to the camera to discuss their roles, their views of the profession, their routes into surveying, and the importance of surveying for local communities.

This first shoot took place in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and planning for a second session, further north, is underway.

From Hardies Chartered Surveyors, Quantity Surveyor Katelyn McGrotty and Trainee Building Surveyor Thomas Haggarty talked about their career journeys, milestones and ambitions, while Senior Partner Ian Fergusson reflected on his career so far and the opportunities for new surveyors in Scotland. Meanwhile Roddy Innes, a Chartered Surveyor from Shepherd Chartered Surveyors discussed key moments in his career so far and how surveying supports communities in Scotland.

Other interviewees included Sarah Leighton, Trainee Surveyor from Shepherd Chartered Surveyors, and apprentices Finlay Scott, and Liam Johnstone, and placement student Jaya MacDonald, all from Allied Surveyors Scotland. The trio spoke about their perceptions of surveying compared to the realities of the job, and the support of the Matrics network for early career professionals.

The topic of Matrics continued when the camera turned to Emily Hughes, Associate Director at Turner and Townsend, and Katie Dunbar, a Senior Building Surveyor at Reid Mitchell Ltd. Emily is RICS Matrics Scotland Regional Chair and Katie is the former Chair.
